Sciatic pain, causes and symptoms
The sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in the body which starts from nerve roots of the spinal cord and it extends buttock area. This nerve ends down the lower limb of the body. Sciatica pain is very common but most of the time people know the symptoms but they do not recognize the problem with their medical names. The Sciatica pain is also one of them. This pain starts from the low back and with time it reaches to the back of the thigh. As the pain gets worse, it can reach to the below the knee. Many people feel stiffness in their buttocks and legs and they do not know the causes, sciatica pain can be one of them.
This problem can occur due to many reasons. Most people think that this problem occurs due to lumbar disc herniation when it presses on the nerve directly but if there is a small irritation on the sciatic nerve can also cause this pain. This irritation can be because of the abnormal intervertebral disc and this problem is known as radiculopathy in medical term. This problem can also occur due to adjacent bone, tumours, muscle, internal bleeding, infections in or around the lumbar spine, injury, and other causes. It can occur during pregnancy as well
What are causes of sciatica?
While sciatica is most commonly a result of a lumbar disc herniation directly pressing on the nerve, any cause of irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve can produce the symptoms of sciatica. This irritation of nerves as a result of an abnormal intervertebral disc is referred to as radiculopathy. Aside from a pinched nerve from a disc, other causes of sciatica include irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone, tumours, muscle, internal bleeding, infections in or around the lumbar spine, injury, and other causes. Sometimes sciatica can occur because of irritation of the sciatic nerve during pregnancy.
This problem causes a burning sensation and pain in the backbone, buttock, legs and other lower parts of the body. If the problem is very serious, it can cause numbness too. As the problem keeps increasing, it can lead to lumbar pain, hip pain, leg pain and buttock pain. Some people feel pain in their buttock when they sit for too long especially on a hard surface, it can because of the hardness of the surface and it can also be because of sciatica pain. Sometimes the pain goes away when the person changes the position but it will be temporary and the pain will come back eventually.
There are too many risks associated with this problem. It can lead to diseases like degenerative arthritis of the lumbar spine, lumbar disc disease, and slipped disc, and trauma or injury to the lumbar spine. So getting treatment for this problem is very important. There are treatments for this problem like sciatica physical therapy but it depends on the cause of the problem and its severity that which treatment will help. The time of the pain also depends on the severity of the pain. If the pain is too long and the person is not getting treatment, it can become a lifelong problem.
